INFORMATION ABOUT ARTIES The town of Arties (population 400) is located at 1143 m altitude, on the confluence of the river Garonne and Valarties, in a small widening of the Val d'Aran in the Pyrenees. At the end of the village, the banks of Valarties, dominated by the Tuc de Montardo (2,833 m) leads to the birth of Valarties river, where you can find the basins of Mar, Tòrt, Rius and Restanca, this last with its own mountain retreat. In the old town is the parish church of Santa Maria d'Arties, a Romanesque XI and XII century with an elegant bell tower. North of the village, the right of the Garonne and the other side of the main road, stands the church of Sant Joan d'Arties, a Gothic building from the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, with an octagonal bell tower. It is now a museum equipment which hosts many art exhibitions. South of the town stands the chapel of Sant Pelegrin. In the old part of Arties you can visit two interesting buildings too: the Casa de Paulet Çó (1549) with remarkable windows and Casa de Portolà, which is a square tower from the the sixteenth century. Around 1970 there was built the National Hostel Gaspar de Portolà. On the outskirts of town are the Baths of Arties, sulphurous water which hace two springs. Arties has a medical office, pharmacy, various shops and an interesting selection of pubs and restaurants. It also has a recreational outdoor sports area and a zoo where you can see a protected autochthon bear.
